DESCRIPTION
I was employed by Sports Media as a Junior Game Designer and tasked with working alongside four other team members to create a financial game. Despite being in my second year at HU when I took up this internship, I still had much to learn and was relatively new to some aspects of the job. Our primary responsibility as a team was to develop a concept for a financial game and create a comprehensive game design document (GDD) that would guide other designers in their work. To achieve this, I spent a considerable amount of time researching various game ideas, concept art, and meeting with team members weekly to share our findings.
After some deliberation, we eventually settled on creating a 2D financial game targeted at younger children, which would take players from the basic stages of obtaining a credit card to purchasing a house. With everyone on board with this idea, I was given the task of producing level sketches to give a clearer picture of what the game would look like. Towards the end of the internship, we managed to complete the GDD and even had extra time to create a basic prototype of the game. To develop the prototype, I sourced some assets that resembled our concept art and began designing a level. Additionally, I included a character that could move around the scene, jump and interact with objects. By the end of the internship, we had a simple prototype that we could share. Overall, this experience taught me about the importance of research within the gaming industry and emphasized the critical role that GDD's play in game development.
